Taking a long exposure picture in dark conditions can be a challenge, because the camera’s auto-focus capabilities find it difficult to “see” a point of focus.

1. Use a flashlight to temporarily light up your subject (glow sticks work well, too).

2. Use your camera’s flash pulse, in the full-auto mode, to set the focus.

3. Set the lens to infinity

4. Focus on points of light that are at a similar distance to the subject

5. Remember, if you’re using your lenses auto focus capabilities to set the focus, to flip the switch to manual focus once the correct focus is achieved (to “lock the focus”). #1: Bring the Right Gear

Here’s what you’ll need to bring:

Camera (see below for requirements)

Tripod (as sturdy as possible)

Remote Shutter Release (optional, though recommended)

#2: Setting Manual Exposure

To keep your exposure identical between shots (assuming the lighting/weather isn’t changing), use manual exposure mode. Since you want everyone in the shot to be sharp, use a higher aperture to increase the depth of field. I used f/5.0, but feel free to go higher.

Another thing that you want to keep constant in each of the photographs is the focus.
