Who Asked Flickr to Take Down Obama Joker Photo?

Time, DC, and the photographer who took the picture all deny filing a complaint.

Amplifyd from newsbusters.org
As NewsBusters reported last Wednesday, the photo sharing website Flickr removed the Obama Joker picture that was later transformed into posters showing up in cities around the country.
At the time, Flickr claimed it had acted on advice of counsel due to legal issues involving copyright infringement.
Yet, according to Thomas Hawk, none of the conceivably interested parties filed a complaint with Flickr
Hawk contacted the photo’s creator Firas Alkhateeb to see if he knew who filed the request:
“I actually don’t know who filed the DMCA notice,” wrote Alkhateeb to me in an email, “but I figured it must be from Time magazine, since it’s their image. All flickr told me was that one was filed, but not by who.”
it appears Flickr is engaging in its own form of political censorship by either acting unilaterally or complying with the wishes of a party possessing no legal right to the picture in questionRead more at newsbusters.org

Flickr v. Free Speech. Where Is Their Courage?

A rare political photography clip.

Amplifyd from www.techcrunch.com

One thing I’ve learned over the years is this - screwing over your users while yelling “the lawyers made me do it!” rarely ends well.

Flickr really stepped in it this time
Sometime last week they took down a photoshopped image of President Obama that makes him look like the Heath Ledger (Joker) character from The Dark Knight
Thomas Hawk has a good overview
There are lots of pictures mocking President Bush on a Time Magazine cover on Flickr that haven’t been removed. And of the Heath Ledger Joker character.
In the past Flickr has deleted accounts of users who are critical of President Obama, but as far as I know nothing like this was done to users who were critical of Bush.
It’s clear that the Flickr team wanted to take this image down. Not only was the image removed, but the entire page was taken down with all the comments to the image
Flickr lost my trust over this issue. They failed to stand up for a user who chose to display his work on Flickr over competitors. Read more at www.techcrunch.com
