Just an update to let you know that Rebekah and myself have just finished our first Help-Portrait assignment.
This was a tough one as it was for a beautiful 11 year old girl at Rogers House who does not have much time left.

To be perfectly honest with all you, when I initiated this project in Ottawa, I envisioned taking portraits of seniors in nursing/retirement homes, happy children, single moms, people of modest means etc.
I was a little nervous because of the responsibility and importance of these photo’s.

I spent the weekend editing my shots and on more than one occasion my wife Nicole and I got teary eyed seeing Heathers beautiful eyes and their gaze back… as Nicole said, it’s as if Heather is looking back at us through the eyes of an old soul…

This particular session has touched me like no other and will stay with me for the rest of my life.
I’m sure that Rebekah feels the same…

I started on my quest for HDR portraits in 2007 and keep refining my process. I do them using the 3 image auto bracket method and usually render with Photomatix, then Photoshop for final tweaks and to add a few of my effects.For more in depth, see my HDR tips on Pro Photo Show. I also have an HDR workshop in WA coming fall 2009.

Basics for non HDR buffs. A regular camera captures a far smaller range of light than our eyes. That amazing sunset, with a green tree in the foreground, may look great to your eye, but in the photo. that foreground might be nothing but a black hole.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a method of taking multiple images of the same scene at various exposure levels and combining them, bringing out the light and dark details from each and working them for the right look. For more HDR See my Nature Gallery.

Last week we received a suggestion from one of our readers about Leonard Gren’s beautiful fashion photography. And beautiful it is! I was going through his site last night and found other great non-fashion related photos that definitely deserved a mention as well!

I think what I love the most about Leonard’s work is that it’s so clean, as in, not overally processed with textures and what have you. All I’ve been seeing lately is incredibly overdone photos so this is a nice break from all of that. Brent Lundy Promo Shoot :: by Zack Arias

Brent Lundy was in town this week and came in for a full day shoot. Erik and I went location scouting Tuesday afternoon and were wishing we had brought coats. We were cussing at the heat the next day. Welcome to Atlanta. I twittered some of the locations that day and a lot of folks responded to the the “rust bucket” so I’ve included a few extras of that spot.
